The 1996-97 season sees the ascendancy of series regular Noah Wyle as John Carter, now a full-fledged intern who assumes the position of surgery consultant in the season premiere, "Dr. Carter, I Presume" (an episode that also introduces Laura Innes as Dr. Kerry Weaver, who will become central to the series). Season three brings other changes as well, some of them radical, to ER: Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) decides to leave town in "Union Station," and Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards)--who up to this point hasn't shared his feelings--follows her to the train station and declares his love…but fails to persuade her to stay. Nurse Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben), revealed at the end of the previous year to be HIV-positive, struggles with the burden of managing the disease and keeping her condition secret, but she's forced to go public in "Homeless for the Holidays," a dramatic Christmas episode. "Let the Games Begin" focuses on rumors that the hospital is about to close, with Dr. David Morganstern (recurring guest star William H. Macy) taking center stage (Macy won an Emmy for his work in this season's episodes, with this one singled out for special praise). Big-screen star Kirsten Dunst figures prominently in the latter half of the season, while George Clooney--arguably the one true "breakout" star to come from ER--doesn't seem quite as prominent, although his Dr. Doug Ross is still a force to be reckoned with. On balance, the third season can be judged as an exceptional one--and ER is a series that has always set the bar high. DVD extras include two new documentaries ("ER Specialists: Fear of Flying" and "The Nurses Station"), commentary on two episodes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Highly recommended. (E.
