Remade for ABC in 2008, this popular British TV series is built around an intriguing premise: while investigating murders committed by a serial killer, Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler (John Simm) is hit by a speeding car and wakes up to find himself transported back to the year 1973. Is this a delusion resulting from his injuries? Has he suddenly gone mad? Or has he actually traveled back in time? While grappling with this surreal situation, Sam continues to ply his trade—although not easily, given the crude technology and sharply different attitudes of the era. Part police procedural, part sci-fi, part postmodern fever dream, BBC's Life on Mars is a wholly unique show that works on multiple levels and features consistently fine writing and acting. Of the eight episodes from the 2006 first set, the outstanding fourth entry finds Sam discovering that many of his colleagues in the Manchester PD are taking bribes from a local gangster, although his partner, DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister), seems reluctant to help him put a stop to the practice. Another corker is the season finale, in which Sam's father, about to walk out on his family, becomes a suspect in the murder of a bookmaker's clerk. Viewers who take their cop shows straight, without whimsy or irony, might not care for Life on Mars, but those willing to suspend disbelief and travel in Sam's brave new world will definitely enjoy the journey. DVD extras include audio commentaries, a behind-the-scenes documentary (with cast and crew interviews), interviews (with director Bharat Nalluri, composer Ed Butt, and production designer Brian Sykes), and outtakes. Recommended. (E. Hulse) Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2009.
