Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul both won 2010 Emmy Awards (Cranston's third for the show) for their performances as high school chemistry teacher turned master meth cook Walter White and street-level drug dealer turned business partner Jesse Pinkman in Vince Gilligan's darkly funny and morally unsettling original cable series. In the third season, Walter is newly separated from wife Skyler (Anna Gunn) after she discovers his secret criminal life (which began when he was diagnosed with lung cancer). Made an offer he can't refuse, Walter must either work exclusively for local drug kingpin Gus (Giancarlo Esposito), or try to protect his family and loved ones from Gus's displeasure. What has always made Breaking Bad so compelling is the fact that Walter's every choice carries fallout. The Mexican cartels want him dead, and Gus wants to control him, but the deeper Walter gets into the narcotics trade, the more vicious he must become to survive. The show mesmerizingly follows this transformation—which seems logical (even necessary) as things escalate—with Walter losing a little bit more of his humanity with each successive act. Compiling all 13 episodes from the 2010 season, DVD and Blu-ray extras include select episode commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Highly recommended. (S.
