My time as Caz Hazard

Summary: At the end of grade ten,15-year-old Caz's life takes a different path when she is expelled for punching her boyfriend in the face. This incident promotes Caz's enrollment into Dogwood Senior Secondary, a small school dedicated to students who may need more individualized programs. It's here where she soon discovers she has dyslexia. Once in the "sped" class, Caz hooks up with a girl by the name of Amanda who concentrates more on getting into trouble than staying out of it. Feeling as if her world is falling apart, what with her parents' recent separation and her missing her old school friends, Caz gets caught up in the reckless lifestyle of Amanda. Stealing money, shoplifting, and attacking other students physically and verbally are some of the antics of which Caz finds herself a part. When another "sped," Dodie, whom Caz and Amanda have picked on, commits suicide, Caz is forced to take a long hard look at who she has become.

Gr 8 Up-Punching out her so-called boyfriend for sleeping with another girl seemed like a good idea at the time, but Caz Hallard finds herself in a special-education class in a new school after being suspended from her old one. Tests indicate that she is dyslexic, which her super-perfect mother refuses to accept. Caz's disgrace exacerbates her parents' already rocky relationship, and she finds herself seesawing between them and frustrated by both. As her parents' marriage falls apart, Caz is drawn more and more to Amanda, a world-weary rebel. Trying to find a balance in a world gone awry, she tries to protect her brilliant younger brother from becoming their parents' pawn. She loses touch with Mel, a stabilizing influence in her chaotic life. Caz knows she cannot bring herself to tell her old friend of her new exploits with Amanda: shoplifting and teasing Dodie Dunstan, a particularly vulnerable classmate. After Dodie commits suicide, Caz finds herself shocked to her senses, but it isn't easy to face up to the wrongs she's committed. Kyi paints a situation common to our culture: adolescents struggling to find their identity with imperfect adult examples. Readers will easily identify with the opposing forces Caz faces as she tries to make sense of her life. A compelling contemporary story for low-skill/reluctant readers.-Roxanne Myers Spencer, Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

ISBN 1-55143-317-6. 3Q 4P M J S The Canadian-based Orca Soundings series fulfills the wishes of countless librarians and teachers by providing well-written, relevant stories geared toward lower level readers. These slender books are an easy sell with their colorful, teen-savvy covers and edgy titles. A broad range of topics and viewpoints allow readers plenty of choices for individual reading preferences, as demonstrated by four recent additions. My Time as Caz Hazard is the story of Caz, a teenage girl who finds herself transferred to a new school at the beginning of her junior year. She is also placed in a remedial reading class, where she is simultaneously embarrassed over her new "special-ed" designation and relieved to have help with her academic struggles. She finds herself changing under the stress of the new situation and problems at home and does not entirely like the person she is becoming. Dialogue is sharp, and the plot moves quickly, although as with many books in this series, character development is fairly breezyCharmed tells a much darker story. Izzy is a teenage girl saddled with her mother's obnoxious live-in boyfriend and the uncomfortable label of "white trash." When things become unbearable at home, Izzy moves in with her dropout boyfriend, despite the strange and scary people he hangs out with. Gradually she becomes entrapped in a prostitution ring, where she is regularly drugged, beaten, and raped. The sex and violence are not graphic but implied, along the lines of Go Ask Alice. Readers interested in that kind of gritty drama would probably like this book as wellNo More Pranks relates the story of mischievous Pete, who has just been suspended from school for calling a sex talk show and pretending to be one of his teachers. His punishment is to spend the summer living with his Uncle Jean, who runs a kayaking company in Tadoussac on the St. Lawrence River. The French Canadian wilderness is an especially satisfying setting for Pete's subsequent misadventures, culminating in a prank that might catch some bad guys-or get Pete killed. Lots of action here, combined with nice insights on the clash between tourism and the preservation of natural environmentsGrind recounts the skateboarding adventures of Phillip and his friends. When the kids watch the famous professional skater Bam Bam Bradley shoot some video footage to use on his Web site, they get the idea of starting their own skateboarding site. Phillip finds himself pushing for better and better video footage, until he is forced to realize that his skateboarding ambition could be hurting his friendships. This story is a little less engaging than some other series books, but it is certainly of interest to skateboarders and their fansThere are eighteen previous books in the series. Most are suitable for middle school through high school readers. There are many reasons why teens find themselves uninterested in reading, but these books are great tools for luring them back.-Diane Emge 4Q 3P M J S Copyright 2005 Voya Reviews.
