Gr 10 UpâJulia Riley and her friend Ruth are stifled by their ultraconservative Christian upbringing. Ruth is a preacher's daughter whose parents have a "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus" doorbell, while Julia's mom closes her lunch notes "In God's love." Everything changes when Ruth has sex at a party and becomes pregnant at the same time as Julia's stepmother. The teen decides to learn everything she can from Miki's midwife, Maria, so that she can conceal her pregnancy and later abandon the newborn at her father's church. In the end, Ruth keeps the baby, and her parents disown her. Julia learns to accept the change in plans while learning that one cannot always plan for every situation. Julia's love of classic literature is explored through famous first lines and some plot analysis. Harvey's novel is weighed down by her overuse of negative stereotypes in the narrow Christian world she paints, a slew of underdeveloped characters, and a disjointed, shallow plot.âAdrienne L. Ruth and Julia have been best friends since they were little, so when rebellious Ruth discovers that she is pregnant, she turns to intelligent, pragmatic Julia for help. Julia is quick to devise a plan to hide Ruth's pregnancy, deliver the baby in private, and anonymously drop off the baby at Ruth's father's church. Despite the tall order, the two manage to pull off the plan rather easily until Ruth begins to grow attachedâfirst to the idea of the baby and then to baby Jane herself. When Ruth's conservative Christian parents discover the truth and disown their daughter, Julia devises Plan B, which involves Julia's father, his new wife, and their new baby, Boone Although the novel resolves on a positive note, Harvey does well to explore some of the complexities inherent to unplanned teen pregnancies, family dynamics, and coming-of-age. Furthermore Harvey's clever integration of classic literature to inform Julia's discoveries adds weight to her character and motivations. Unfortunately even with the literary frame, the characterization overall is a little flat; the intense relationships between characters are told to the reader rather than shown. Still the story is compelling and will likely appeal to readers.
