Readers who are looking for middle school realistic fiction will enjoy this book. Josh's mother expects him to be class president, but he doesn't want to run. He forms a club for students who want to stand up to their parents. Wang and Magnolia are the only two who show up for the first meeting. Wang doesn't want to play chess and Magnolia doesn't want to play Juliet in the school play. The kids think the name of the club is dumb, but they can't seem to come up with anything better than Dunces Anonymous. Then add Stacey to the mix. Stacey wants to be class president, but also wants to join the club because she thinks she is missing out. The story is a bit of a slow starter, and some of the narration is forced. However, the adventures and intrigues that Josh, Wang, and Magnolia plot to get out of doing what their parents expect are quite entertaining. This is a typical scenario of kids vs. parents and how they all figure out what is best for everyone in the end. It is a nice read, whi h captures the spirit of children first learning to branch out. Gr 5â8âJosh Johnson,11, struggles with a parent who has a listening problem. His friends are much like himâso much so that they create a club to further their dreams (instead of their parents' dreams for them), and call themselves Dunces Anonymous: "A Club for Kids who aren't as Good at Stuff as their Parents Think they Should Be." Although the concept for this novel is one that many overachieving students can relate to, the plot proceeds episodically, and the characters have little depth. Jaimet fails to illustrate the thought processes and emotions that would influence most children in Josh's situation, and her work could benefit from the adage "show, don't tell."âNatalie Teske, The First Academy Royal Library, Orlando, FL
