While visiting family at a beach house, nine-year-old Jake and his younger brother Tommy are challenged to a boat race by their cousin Lexie. Rough waters capsize the boys' boat, leading them to shelter in the Smuggler's Cave. As the tide rises and the boys and Lexie are trapped in the cave, they must try and find a route to safety. The brisk pace may attract reluctant readers, and the suspense level is appropriate for the target audience. However, the Canadian setting and unfamiliar terms might confuse American readers.
