Take a new whimsical trip down the rabbit hole with narrator Katherine Kellgren in AFTER ALICE. This adaptation tells the story of Alice's friend, Ada, and HER experience in Wonderland. Kellgren does impressive work, animating each peculiar voice to differentiate and entertain. The variety of tone, pace, and emotion makes for a highly amusing and enjoyable listen. Her proper and potent accent is fitting for an eccentric tale filled with mischievous characters that begs listeners to choose their favorite playful voice. The quizzical banter that Ada encounters in Wonderland is perfectly executed and supported by Kellgren's theatrics. She's an exquisite example of a narrator who uses all her strengths and who isn't afraid of being expressive and dramatic. D.Z. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

Lewis Carroll's classic tale is a starting point for Maguire's rendering of 1860s Oxford. Alice's friend Ada, escaping her restrictive home and wretched iron corset, follows Alice down the rabbit hole for an adventure of her own. Meanwhile, Alice's sister, Lydia, provides a view of Victorian life above ground, which proves no less nonsensical as her father visits with an elderly Darwin and a young American admirer. Kellgren's nimble narration moves us between these worlds with great skill as she voices the shrill stiffness of Ada's governess, the romantic longings of Lydia, the aloof coolness of the American (aptly named Mr. Winter), along with alternating chapters of saucy Ada's trip to Wonderland, where she also encounters Mr. Winter's ward, an escaped slave named Siam. Kellgren's narrative talent truly shines as she voices the denizens of the fantasy world underground and the softly southern tones of Siam, who discovers a new kind of freedom through a looking glass. Adult listeners will appreciate the intricate interweaving of themes, while teens will relate to Lydia's awakening adult longings. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
