Based not on Shakespeare's Macbeth but rather Nikolai Leskov's 1865 novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, William Oldroyd's film serves up an uncompromising portrait of ruthlessness driven by unbridled passion. Relocated to Victorian-era Northumbria, this story about an unhappily married young woman who resorts to extreme measures to free herself from the shackles imposed by her stern father-in-law and brutal husband is presented in harsh, unforgiving terms, but it is undeniably powerful. In a breakthrough performance, Florence Pugh stars as Katherine, virtually sold into an arranged marriage to Alexander (Paul Hilton), the heavy-drinking, boorish son of surly mining magnate Boris (Christopher Fairbank). When both are called away on business, Katherine fallsâwithout much resistanceâinto the arms of crude but virile new groomsman Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis). Upon their return, Boris and Alexander threaten to make Katherine's life even more miserable, and she takes drastic action. Throughout, Pugh commands the screen with subtle nuance rather than histrionic outbursts, making her eventual actions all the more horrifying. This is a dark, nasty tale with some scenes that will doubtlessly upset the squeamish. But while it will likely antagonizeâand even angerâsome viewers, Lady Macbeth is a clever reworking of Leskov's grim take on Shakespeare. Recommended. [Note: DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette (6 min.), and a photo gallery. Bottom line: a small extras package for a fine drama.] (F. Swietek) Copyright Video Librarian Reviews 2017.
