- Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2008 September #1
Despite the title, in this latest addition to the long-running Davy tales, it is Davy's little sister Dinah who kicks the winning goal. The story itself is amusing yet thoughtful. Though the glowering Bad Badgers look tough, the prospect of winning a real soccer ball in the big challenge match spurs Davy and his Wild Rabbits to work out, practice hard, eat spinach until they feel green, and, most importantly, give themselves confidence by building team spirit. Featuring plenty of soccer action and appealing scenes of expressive young animals dashing back and forth in woodland settings, this will keep sports fans engrossed even as it gently suggests that it might not be such a bad thing to let younger sibs play, too. After Davy's grandfather's threadbare soccer ball loses all of its stuffing, the gang decides to take on the Big Bad Badgers in hopes of winning the prize: "a brand new ball just like the pros use." There's not much tension in this good-natured story of hard work and perseverance. Expressive illustrations show likable Davy rallying his pals to victory. K-Gr 2âIn this endearing story, Davy forms a soccer team with his siblings. The bunnies lament early on that their ball is flat as a pancake. Father digs in the back of his shed and contributes a stuffed leather pouch from which to make a new one. Mother also tries to be encouraging by making red uniform shirts, which, unfortunately, look like flour sacks. Nonetheless, readers can anticipate an exciting game of the underdogsâer, ah, Wild Rabbitsâversus a team of bulliesâthe Big Bad Badgers. Done in soft watercolors, the front endpapers portray the family roster with their enormous bunny ears; final endpapers show the team frolicking with a new black-and-white soccer ball. Children will understand the dream that each player has of overcoming the odds and becoming a star in a favorite sport. Those who have been charmed by Davy and Dinah growing up through picture books such as Will You Mind the Baby, Davy? (1997) or Davy in the Middle (2004, both NorthSouth) will enjoy another tale about this family.âBlair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
