From its opening voiceover in Nicole Kidman's questionable Southern accent, there's something amiss with this Civil War epic built around a lackluster love story about Ada Monroe (Kidman, who is too old to be credible as a bashful unmarried belle in 1864 Dixie) waiting for the return of her soldier sweetheart Inman (Jude Law) while struggling to survive on her dead father's farm. Adapted by director Anthony Minghella from Charles Frazier's acclaimed novel, Cold Mountain's sweeping scope, earnest intentions, pinpoint period atmosphere, brutal battles, and overall cinematic beauty are above reproach. But Kidman and Law lack vitality as lovers, mostly because their characters hardly know each other and spend the whole movie apart since he joins the Confederate army early on, then deserts and walks a long way home to her waiting arms. As a result, the fantastic supporting cast constantly upstages the stars. Philip Seymour Hoffman as an amusing but deservedly disgraced preacher and Natalie Portman as a desperately lonely war widow are especially compelling. But Renee Zellweger steals the movie as a grubby, lowborn drifter who helps rescue Ada's farm, filling the screen and the withered fields with an amusing, daringly pungent, force-of-nature performance.
